Electric mobility scooters continue to grow in popularity as more people experience the flexibility and freedom these sporty mobility devices offer. Individuals who have difficulty getting around on their own can maintain active, involved lifestyles with the help of a mobility scooter.

Mobility scooters fall into the following categories:

Three-wheel Standard: 
Designed for inside use, these electric mobility scooters are more agile than four-wheeled models. They can easily handle tight turns and maneuver small spaces.

Four-wheel Standard:

Travel:

Folding:
Like travel models, folding scooters are smaller and weigh less than standard models. They typically feature three wheels and enable the user to fold the unit for storage or travel purposes with minimal bending, stooping or lifting.

Heavy Duty:
These models have greater weight capacity than other scooter types. Most scooters can accommodate users who weigh up to 250 pounds. Heavy duty scooters are built for individuals weighing up to 350 pound and some models are designed to handle weights up to 500 pounds.

Seating Options

A standard scooter seat works well for individuals who spend an hour or two per day using their mobility scooter. Individuals who plan to sit and use the scooter for extended periods during the day should consider an upgraded seat option.

High-back seats, power elevating options, special swivel features for easy entry and exist, and custom seat widths can be ordered for most scooter models.

In addition, the arms of the chair should be selected to meet the needs of the user. Some arms are stationary; while, others can lift up or swivel sideways for easy access.

Some electric mobility scooters feature arms that can be adjusted narrower or wider to maximize fit and comfort for individuals

Accessories 

Mobility scooters can be customized with a wide range of accessories to meet the needs of the user. These include:

  • Headlights for individuals who plan to use the scooter when it is dark.
  • Pouches that serve as handy carrying bags and are designed to be secured to the scooter during use.
  • Baskets that are typically made out of steel or high-grade plastic cart and attach to the front or back of the unit.
  • Specially designed equipment holders for oxygen tanks, canes and crutches to safely transport them when the scooter is in use.
  • Canopies and covers that keep your scooter free from dirt and environmental factors when it is parked or stored.

As you begin the purchase process, consider how and where you will be using the scooter and the specific requirements you have for transport.

Also, it is important to note that scooters may be designed for use by either right or left-handed individuals. Therefore take extra care to ensure proper fit and design to fulfill your mobility needs.

Be sure to test drive a number of models to see what feels the best and is the easiest to operate. In addition, always ask about warranties and servicing before finalizing a buying decision.
