How to Choose a
Wheelchair Mobility Scooter Lift

If you’re in need of a wheelchair mobility scooter lift when you travel by car or van, there are a number of factors that come into play in your selection process.

The first criterion is looking at lift models based on whether you need to stay on your scooter for transport or have the capability to transfer yourself from your scooter to your vehicle.

Scooter lifts come in two basic models: platform and rotary. Automatic platform models are operated with the push of a button that triggers the lift to lower, raise, fold and unfold as needed.

There are semi-automatic platform lifts that are less expensive but not as convenient because they necessitate manual folding and unfolding to operate and store.

A rotary scooter lift, like the name implies, works by swinging the lift from side to side, and up and down, to load and transport your mobility chair.

Here are some questions to ask as you are evaluating your options for a mobility lift.

  • Can the lift you are planning to buy be easily installed in your vehicle? Are modifications required? And if so, what is involved and how much extra expense will you incur over and above the lift purchase price?

  • Is the size and weight of your scooter compatible with the lift?

  • What lift accessories, options and warrantees do you desire to adequately meet your needs and give you peace of mind? For example, if the drive system on your lift fails, would you want a manual back-up emergency system to lower your lift?

  • How and where will your lift get regular servicing and repairs when needed?
