Traveling by Rail:
Wheelchair Lifts for Trains

If you are planning a trip by rail, call ahead to make sure the rail carrier has wheelchair lifts for trains in service. To ensure you get the space and accommodations you require, make reservations for your wheelchair space, transfer seats (for when you travel in a seat and stow your wheelchair) and accessible sleeper accommodations.

Some train systems such as SJ of Sweden list accessible information online, including available lifts from one destination to another.

Since wheelchair accessible space is limited, make your reservations as far in advance of travel as possible and confirm availability of lifts.

Within two weeks of departure, rail systems “release” handicapped accessible sleepers and seating back into their general reservations inventory for any passenger to have on a first-come, first-served basis.

Ask about any fare discounts available when you contact the rail carrier. For example, Amtrak of America offers special pricing to passengers with disabilities.

To receive a discount, you must book your reservation by telephone or at a ticket counter (no online bookings).

Amtrak also requests written documentation of disability at the ticket counter and when boarding the train. Acceptable documentation includes a transit system ID card, membership card from a disabilities organization, or a letter from a physician.

As with any other type of travel, planning and making pre-trip contact are key to ensuring a smooth, enjoyable trip.

Start with searching the internet and then contact the rail carriers directly. You also may opt to use the services of a travel agent who has expertise on traveling with disabilities.
