Wheelchair Heros
Seize Life's Opportunities

Wheelchair heros are not extraordinary people doing brave things. Rather, wheelchair heros are every day folks who have courageously risen above their disability to take risks. Examples of two wheelchair notable heros are Cheri Blauwet and Jesse Billauer. These young twenty-somethings have moved beyond the boundaries of their wheelchairs.

Cheri Blauwet
Injured as an infant in a farm accident, Cheri is a multi-medal winner in the Paralympic Games. She won the Boston Marathon in 2004 and 2005. This wheelchair hero was one of 20 students nationwide on the USA Today’s All-American Academic Team in 2002.

In 2004 she won the Paul Hearne Leadership Award from the American Association of People with Disabilities. Cheri is an honor student who majored in Molecular and Cellular Biology and a Rhodes Scholarship finalist. She entered medical school in 2003.

Her goal, according to her website, www.cheriblauwet.com, is “to become a successful physician while also promoting the health and human rights for individuals with a disability on a global scale.”

Jesse Billauer
Jessie is a motivational speaker who has appeared on national television. According to Jesse’s website, www.liferollson.org, he was a star athlete with a promising surfing career ahead of him. Then he was injured in a surfing accident when he was 17.

Afterwards he kept in contact with his surfing friends. Now he travels all over the world meeting top surfers, musicians, and others.

Despite his disability, he received his degree in Communications from San Diego State University in 2002 and has been featured on news shows and in magazines. His website says that he shares his life experiences, “in the hope that he can impress upon others the fragility of life and the benefits of healthy living.”

These two wheelchair heros show that life goes on and can be exciting and rewarding. If you have recommendations of other heros you would like to highlight on this site, please email your article to info@mobility-advisor.com.
