What to Look for When
Buying a Wheelchair for a Teen

When buying a wheelchair for a teen, here are some key questions to ask that will help facilitate the purchasing decision process.

  • Does the teen need an electric or manual chair?
  • Does the teen need a chair that is propelled by an attendant?
  • Does the teen play a sport or enjoy the outdoors? You can find a mobility chair specifically designed for specific recreational activities.
  • Do you need to adapt a vehicle to transport the chair?
  • Do you need a wheelchair ramp for the house or car?
Take into account how much the teenager is likely to grow, and look into buying a chair with an expandable frame. Consult with a mobility chair expert to ensure proper fit and comfort. This includes making sure the wheelchair encourages good posture.

It’s also important that the teen learn how to maintain the chair. Ask for how-to instructions from your wheelchair provider.

Once you’ve purchased the wheel chair, establish some wellness habits.

Your teen should be aware of the the possibility of getting pressure sores, which can occur when a person sits too long in one position, cutting off blood supply.

Check the skin carefully every day and, if a sore starts to develop, contact a healthcare provider for counsel on ways to keep it from becoming worse.

Be sure to encourage the teenager to develop good fitness habits. Find a sport or exercise routine that he or she enjoys and can do on a regular basis.

Frequent exercise promotes a healthy heart, increases strength, improves mood, and perhaps most important, increases physical and emotional resiliency.
