Wheelchair Elevator Considerations

A wheelchair elevator, or platform lift, can enhance access in a multi-floor home for the wheelchair user. Several different kinds of elevators are on the market; your needs and circumstances will determine which of these will work best:

  • The incline elevator or lift can get the wheelchair user up and down stairs safely in a residence. A number of models can be used indoors or outdoors and feature a compact folding platform that allows the staircase to be unobstructed when the lift is not in use.

  • A traditional home elevator doesn’t necessarily require major renovations to your residence. Models are available that maximize living space and minimize construction and cost by eliminating the need for a hoist way.
  • The following are among the questions should be considered when selecting the right elevator:
  • What is the length and width of the wheelchair equipment?

  • Will you be using the elevator indoors, outdoors, or both?

  • How many stops will you need to make to access each floor of your home?

  • Are you able to propel yourself onto the elevator?

  • Where are the load bearing walls in your home located (generally a home elevator will have to be installed here)?
