What to Look for in a
Wheelchair Camp for Your Child

A wheelchair camp offers children the opportunity to make friends, learn new skills, and gain valuable training in independent living. There are many kinds of camps available—everything from sports to adventure to special-interest camps.

When looking for a wheelchair camp for your child, consider the following:

  • Decide whether you want a day camp or an overnight camp. Kids under the age of seven might not be ready for an extended overnight camp. A day damp can be the perfect introduction to the camp experience and get them ready for extended-stay camps.

  • If possible, visit the camp and talk with the camp director.

  • During your visit, ask lots of questions. What is the camp’s philosophy? What is the ratio of campers to staff members? What activities are offered? What kind of medical support is available?

  • Find out if the camp is certified by the American Camping Association. The ACA Web site (acacamps.edu) has a search feature that helps locate camps for children of all ages with special needs.

  • Share what you find out with your child to prepare the way. If your child knows what to expect, the camping experience will be more a positive one.

  • Find out what arrangements the camp makes for parents to communicate with their children.
