Transport Wheelchair: Benefits
Individuals and Their Caregivers

A transport wheelchair is a light mobility device used to move a person from place to place. It is great for taking a friend or loved one to the doctor, shopping, special events, and to visit with friends.

These types of wheel chairs are beneficial to the caregiver because they are easier to fold into vehicles and to lift. Models vary by feature and design, so take some time to research which chair will best suit your needs.

Wheels on these mobility devices are much smaller than those on a normal wheelchair. A caregiver must push these companion chairs.

The lighter weight of a transport wheelchair offers a great advantage over a regular wheelchair, particularly when mobility is an issue. Some models weigh only about 15 pounds.

This allows a caregiver to more easily pick up and store the device. These chairs also travel well in many different styles of vehicles.

Some transport chairs can carry a person weighing up to 300 pounds but most carry 250 pounds. Be sure to check manufacturer’s guidelines. Following are features to consider prior to making a purchase:

  • Frame, which will determine the size of the chair as well as how much weight it can handle. Aluminum frames are often very lightweight yet sturdy.

  • Armrests, which can be fixed, removable, and of varying length. Some are even adjustable. Look for padding for comfort.

  • Footrests, which can elevate, swing away, remain stationary or detach.

  • Foldabilty, which may be necessary for storage,

  • Features, such as handbrakes or seat belt, cup holder or pockets, or tilting back rest

  • Wheel size (larger sizes may make the chair roll easier)

  • Seat widths (many come in either 17” or 19” seat widths)

  • Seat material and padding

  • Carry straps for lifting the chair
You can expect to pay anywhere from $100 to $350+ for a transport chair.
