Getting Around:
Disabled Mobility Aids Can Help

Disabled mobility aids can make life easier. If you use a wheelchair or require other assistance, you already know how difficult movement can be without the assistance of these products. Some mobility aids that may help you keep your independence include:

  • Battery-powered power chairs. These highly maneuverable and versatile machines are good alternatives to electric wheelchairs. Some swivel or have seat lift options and enable greater freedom for those with mobility restrictions.

  • Battery-powered scooters. There are three– and four-wheeled models. Some have baskets and are useful for shopping. Others are better for outdoor adventures.

  • Lightweight walkers. These come with or without wheels and are helpful if you are not confined to a wheelchair. Most fold for easy storage. Some come equipped with a seat or pockets. Others accommodate baskets, trays, or totes.

  • Walking sticks or canes. These can be made of solid wood or folding aluminum and come in sizes to fit all heights. Make sure the walking stick has a rubber tip to prevent sliding.
  • Smaller aids and equipment that might help you include light-weight and portable power lift cushions, which work like a lift recliner. There are also key turners with handles to help open doors and items to help with gardening or driving.

To learn about these and other products on the market, consult your healthcare professional, medical equipment retailer, and/or physical therapy providers.

In addition, an internet search on mobility aids will provide a bevy of sites and resources with information on products designed to help further your independent lifestyle.
